چکیده

A model of radar imaging of ocean phenomena is proposed. This model is an extension of the background NRCS model [7] in the case of non-uniform medium. Radar scattering component takes into account Bragg and non-Bragg (specular reflections and impact of wave breaking) scattering mechanisms. Varying surface current, surface temperature and surfactants are the main sources of medium non-uniformities. Transformation of wave spectrum and wave breaking in non-uniform medium is described in the relaxation approximation. Model calculations are compared with field observations. An overall good agreement is obtained. It is shown that wave breaking play important role in the formation of radar signatures of ocean phenomena.

Intensity of convective motions in marine atmospheric boundary layer retrieved from ocean surface radar imagery

The paper focuses on the occurrence and development of coherent structures observed in the atmosphere above ocean under natural conditions. Microwave imaging radars are suggested as data take instruments. The phenomena of marine atmospheric cells and rolls onset, horizontal planform, aspect ratio and scaling phenomena are examined. Convective patterns manifested in radar images and information ...

Polarimetric Radar Imaging of the Ocean Surface

Introduction: Understanding the relationship between ocean surface waves and the radar backscatter they generate is key to the development of new radar-based techniques to measure ocean parameters, such as wave height and current speed and direction, of importance to both the Navy and the civilian sector. This knowledge is also needed to improve the Navy’s ability to distinguish between signals...

Spaceborne Imaging Radar Research in the 1990s: an Overview

The imaging radar experiments on Seasat (1978) and on the space shuttles (SIR-A in 1981 and SIR-B in 1984) have resulted in wide interest in the use of spaceborne imaging radars in earth and planetary sciences. The radar sensors provide unique and complementary information about what is acquired with visible and infrared imagers, including subsurface imaging in arid regions,I ,2 allweather obse...

Polarimetric-interferometric Sea Scatter Research Using the Nrl Fopair Radar

The Naval Research Laboratory has recently begun a new basic research program designed to lay the foundation for future Navy applications of high-resolution polarimetric and polarimetric-interferometric radar systems. Despite many years of research, there is a serious lack of high-resolution, polarimetric ocean backscatter data in the radar community from which to fuel advanced applications, su...
